Why Do I Have to Reset My Home Wireless Router So Often?

Joe asked:

My laptop often loses its connection to our home’s wireless router. To solve the problem, I have to unplug the router for just a few seconds.

That works. But, it is really a pain when I’m not near the router.

    Hrm… there could be a couple of reasons. Ive had problems with heat before, make sure its in a cool open place where air can get to it easy… Also try upgrading the firmware to it. Thats about all I can tell you without knowing the make/model and situation you have your router in. Feel free to email me with any other questions you have

    You don’t say what kind of router it is, so it’s hard to be specific…
    in the past, problems that I have known to cause this have included:

    * An intermittent power connection.

    * An impatient user who would press the “hardware reset” button if they didn’t get a fast enough connection…

    * Interference from another router close by, on the same channel

    * Interference from a 2.4Ghz cordless phone

    * Overheating of the router itself.

    * A bug, cured by upgrading the router code (firmware)

    * Being too far from the router, or in a poor signal environment

    * ..and, of course, a faulty router.
